Emergency situations announcement app

The DSU app was Eventya’s way of helping Romania’s emergency system: news and alerts that tell people what is happening in their own community.

For the Department for Emergency Situations it was a preventative measure. Keeping people informed about what was happening around them was meant to stop local emergencies from overwhelming the system.

The challenge

Create reusable components and one standardised way to display, announce and report an emergency.

The standards were set by the Department for Emergency Situations and created in collaboration with it. My work was to turn them into the components every alert, map and report in the app is built from.

Alerts

  • Alerts for the whole country: two yellow wind warnings with their counties and hours, and a weather notice
    Alerts
  • A yellow fog alert: a map of the counties it covers, the hours it holds, what to expect and who published it
    One alert
  • Choose the counties to be alerted for: a list of counties, one ticked, and a Confirm button
    Choosing the counties
  • No new alerts in the chosen county; under it, an alert that is no longer active
    No new alerts
  • A fog alert marked inactive: the map of its counties, its hours and its text
    An alert that has ended

The map

  • The map: places of use nearby, with one hospital chosen and a button to start navigation
    The map
  • A county hospital on the map: its address, phone number and website, and a button to start navigation
    A place
  • A clinic on the map with a photograph of its building, its address and a button to start navigation
    A place with its picture
  • No internet: a crossed-out signal, what to do about it, and a Try again button
    No connection

Reporting

  • Report: a button to call 112, three boxes to add photographs or film, and a field for the message
    A report
  • My reports, sent: two reports, each a photograph of firefighters with its date and state
    My reports
  • My reports, empty: a camera and a line saying nothing has been published yet
    Nothing reported yet

More section and interaction mapping

  • More: the person signed in, lessons, the guide and notification settings, an educational game, then a list of useful linksMore
  • The profile: my reports, lessons learned and tests taken, edit profile and log outProfile
  • Notification settings: a switch for my reports, and the counties to be told aboutNotifications
  • A report that was sent: its photograph, not yet published, the reason given, its text and a galleryA report
  • My reports, sent: two reports, each a photograph of firefighters with its date and stateMy reports
  • Learn: lessons as cards, each with a picture, a title, its first lines and how many have read itLessons
  • Choose a category of lessons: first aid, fires, rescuers, earthquake and others, one tickedLesson categories
  • Edit profile: the picture, name, email and a way to change the passwordEdit profile

Reflection

A standardised language for alerts, readable in any circumstances, is as important as the system that deploys it.
